List of Presidents of India

The President of India is the head of state and first citizen of India and the Supreme Commander of the Indian armed forces. The President`s role is largely ceremonial, with real executive authority vested in the Council of Ministers, headed by the Prime Minister. The powers of the President of India are comparable to those of the monarch of the UK. There were in all 14 presidents till date. Rajendra Prasad Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of Independent India. As the first President, he was indepedent and unwilling to allow the Prime Minister or the party to seize his constitutional rights. However, following the conflict over the passing of the Hindu Code Bill, he restrained his stand. He set several important rules for later Presidents to follow. He had also served as President of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution of the Republic from 1948 to 1950. Highlights of the Union budget 2010-11

The Union Budget of India, referred to as the Annual Financial Statement in Article 112 of the Constitution of India, is the annual budget of the Republic of India,  presented each year on the last working day of February by the Finance Minister of India in Parliament. The budget has to be passed by the House before it can come into effect on April 1, the start of India’s financial year(1st April – March 31st). Total expenditure pegged at Rs 11.08 lakh crore, an increase of 8.6 per cent over 2009-10 Union Budget. Plan expenditure pegged at Rs 3,73,092 crore and Non-Plan expenditure at Rs 7,35,657 crore in budget estimates. 6 per cent increase in plan expenditure and 15 per cent in non-plan expenditure. The Gross Tax Receipts are estimated at Rs. 7,46,651 crore and Non Tax Revenue Receipts are estimated at Rs. 1,48,118 crore for 2010-11. Literacy Rate in India

Literacy is a reasonably good indicator of development in a society. Spread and diffusion of literacy is generally associated with essential trait of today’s civilization such as modernization, urbanization, industrialization, communication and commerce. For the purpose of census, a person aged seven and above, who can both read and write with any understanding in any language, is treated as literate. As per 2001 Census, the overall literacy rate of India is 65.38%. The male literacy rate is 75.96% and female literacy rate is 54.28%. Literacy Rate In Indian State: Census 2011

India’s effective literacy rate has recorded a 9.2 per cent rise to reach 74.04 per cent, according to provisional data of the 2011 census released today. Interestingly, literacy rate improved sharply among females as compared to males. While the effective literacy rate for males rose from 75.26 to 82.14 per cent marking a rise of 6.9 per cent, it increased by 11.8 per cent for females to go from 53.67 to 65.46 per cent. According to provisional totals of the latest census, literates constitute 74 per cent of total population aged seven and above. Ten states and union territories, including Kerala, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Tripura, Goa, Daman and Diu, Puducherry, Chandigarh, National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have attained literacy rate of above 85 per cent, the target set by the Planning Commission to be achieved by 2011-12.
